On December, 2019, Killraven touches the blade of grass-- of Windsor Forest, Georgia -- only to have it turn into the red dust of Mars beneath his bare hands! Killraven is alone with that staggering truth, but not as staggering as those events yet to come!

He stands on the alien wasteland and strides across the Martian landscape as if he has done so for all of his life. Killraven is bewildered by his own reaction to such unearthly surroundings. Phobos and Deimos peer down at him as two lopsided eyes. As the stars strive to speak their truths to him, he finds the truth is shifting as the vermillion sands. The truth exists and rushes past Killraven and then eludes his grasp. Solitude cuts through his thoughts as he finds himself alone? Is there something else beyond the edge of vague awareness?

His boots tread upon the crimson sand as the sun sets the dark sky ablaze. Killraven has never seen a sun in a totally dark sky, but he has envisioned a time when he would bring the War of the Worlds back to the homeworld of the Martians. There is some activity behind him and he starts to turn, and halts. His eyes are now filled with apprehension as an elaborate spectacle is taking place, and the approaching behemoths threaten to overwhelm him with their oncoming pageantry.

Killraven is at the center of a tournament charge! The Martian ride atop giant tortoises in the desert. He sees the lances and banners held in their tentacles and his warrior's instinct guides his hand as a silver star assumes a deadly arc! The spinning silver cuts through the night and bisects the tortoise mount -- and seeks the soft underbelly of a non-existent throat -- and cuts through an insubstantial mucoid body. Killraven is alone once more with only the red dust on the wind and as a legacy to their passing.

He touches the crimson Martian dust -- and it turns to a blade of grass from Windsor Forest, Georgia! M'Shulla does not know where his mud-brother went to on his mind-swap, but it is the longest one he has ever had! Killraven believes he invades the minds of the Martians... but their thoughts and imagery threatened to overwhelm his own sense of self. It caught him unawares... and he may never find a way to control this ability. Killraven does know the location of these latest thoughts! M'Shulla offers his mud-brother some mead to put some color back in his cheeks. Killraven finds the mead to be wretched and asks his mud-brother where he found this particular batch. M'Shulla smiles and says from the same place where he gets his silver stars. Killraven appreciates his mount's temperament, especially since it mirrors his own.

Old Skull stares into the fire and his hand holds the flute... but there is no music. Killraven notices that his friend is not eating and has been known to do one or the other when they were not engaged in battle with the Martians. Old Skull was thinking about Hawk and Grok. Their deaths are still a matter of memory and Old Skull thinks that Hawk was trying to save Grok. Killraven mulls this over for a moment and nods in agreement to his old friend.

The winter sky is blue above Yellowstone National Park. Old Faithful erupts and cascades off the transparent dome that holds it prisoner. The High Overlord bathes in the scalding geyser and it glistens down the length of the bio-chemech armor. Beneath the armor, the Martian surveys the docile killer servants who comprise the mercenary elite. The mercenary elite will one day serve as a banquet for the Martian elite. They watch as a prism tower emerges from the ground and continues upward. From its uppermost level, there is a figure who appears at the center of the manmade radiance. The High Overlord is welcomed to the Yellowstone Sector Mercenary Training Grounds! It is hoped that their efforts meet with his approval! This appearance was timed for the High Overlord's benefit... and is undoubtedly a display of human arrogance from -- Deathraven! The High Overlord does not hear Deathraven's reply, for the geyser's sound triggers memories of a time when Mars was unspoiled and the years before the Martians made their exodus towards the invasion of Earth!

Twin corridors designed for the Martians led to lava caverns -- where the Elite would bath in the crimson liquid. This heat and color both hotter than human blood -- long before the Martians identified the heat and color of human blood... and long before they grew dependent upon this substance. These thoughts flow through the High Overlord like lava and are expressed to other Martians. Deathraven's words remind the High Overlord that he is back in Yellowstone and must use the apparatus to reply in human speech. As Deathraven seeks to remind him that he has been stripped of such qualities as human arrogance, the High Overlord brings word to him of his... brother! Killraven has destroyed the cybernetic stalker known as Skar and is on a personal quest to find his brother!

As a young Martian makes his way through the crimson dust, he is joined by a elderly Martian. The younger Martian stares at the replica of the Olympia Volcano Region, having been born on Earth, and never having been on Mars! The older Martian cannot understand his companion's emotions. They both leave the replica of Martian landscapes. As the artificial wind becomes a pneumatic hum, the younger Martian srives to recall the earlier sound. The dual corridors are patterned after those that transversed beneath Mars. The Martian complex is practical and aesthetics are considered negligible. The two Martians continue their telepathic argument that does not interfere with the soft hum of the life systems which allow them to move under Martian conditions...

The younger Martian is aware that the older Martians may visit their homeworld through their memories, but those of the current generation know only of Earth, and of simulations. As the older Martian views the birth room, the younger one has come to perform the delicate operation of the separation of a beginning Martian life from its parent. The younger Martian appears to be agitated but uses his tentacles to perform the procedure of removal. The pear has been plucked from the tree, and the tree does not celebrate this separation! Nor does it mourn! A transaction has taken place and the immunization process is next.

CRAAASSSSS As the pear is plucked from the tree, the Freemen have arrived on the outskirts of the Martian stronghold! Within the fortress, he has seen the process by which the Martian infants are grown like fruit on a branch... and are then severed from the tree! There are more Martians inside than the Freemen have seen since the time of the arena, where Killraven and others fought hard for their amusement! These past few months have been cause for great celebration! They have met with other humans... and left them to defend their own territories against the aggression of the Martians! They have suffered terrible losses with the deaths of Hawk and Grok... but the Freemen have advanced! One day, these loose ragged bands will join together and overthrow the Martian invaders! Today, Killraven and the Freemen will teach them the meaning of fear!

As the young Martian seeks the replica of Phobos -- he wonders where the twisted rock and the red sand leads to and vanishes. He wonders why the older Martians advocate the total destruction of the humans? Such a thing does not seem to be necessary nor desirable. The older Martian sees how his companions tentacles move in the agitated manner of an Earthling's hands. Killraven uses a silver star primed with some of M'Shulla's mead to create their own doorway into the Martian nursery!

These slanting corridors do not seem to have any warning system! Old Skull knows the Martians are not deaf and must have certainly heard their sudden entrance! KEEEEEEE The older Martian recalls his companion's eyes in the removal room and finds they hold an almost human expression of fondness. The older Martian goes on about the systematic breakdown of human culture through their annihilation and leaving the Martians with the promise of an unclouded future. Their dependency upon humans as a source of nourishment must be eliminated, even if the Earthlings are quite a delicacy. When the younger Martian notes the elder's mention of the "future," his companion reminds him how the Earthlings mark and name everything without understanding the true value of those selfsame things. The younger Martian should be thinking about the upcoming tournament, which served as a festive occasion on Mars until the urgent need for survival.

Killraven peers at rows upon rows of Martian incubators! Thousands of infant Martians squirming in their own liquids... that must be destroyed! "NO!" Carmilla Frost has listened to Killraven's strategies and bowed to them -- although she had thought he lacked that ability! He reminds her this is not the time for moral debate and he will use his sword against her if necessary! Old Skull is holding M'Shulla back as Carmilla reminds Killraven that the battle has not yet begun until they first butcher defenseless infants! And that there is no better time for moral debate than before just such a slaughter -- one which will live on in the minds of the participants -- for the rest of their lives! He reminds her these infants will soon be feeding upon the flesh and blood of Earthlings! They will be increasing the ranks of those who are currently holding their world hostage! As Killraven insists that he is not making his decision out of pleasure, but of necessity, M'Shulla reminds his mud-brother that they are no longer alone!

As the Martians crawl towards them, Killraven pulled out his weapon, and glares at the incubators. Carmilla Frost is screaming as she charges towards him with her blade in hand. The Martians watch as Killraven blasts a hole in the side of the complex and the Freemen find themselves on Mars! The atmospheres of Mars and Earth meet, and forces the air from their lungs! Killraven leads the others off of the precipice. He soars in the lesser gravity and it is a weight removed from both the body and of the mind. The others follow his lead and find a new meaning for the word, "freedom". The tournament has begun and the older Martian notes it on one level, while he continues to search the younger one's eyes for that which he has seen in several of the Earth-born Martians. There is a difference in the ones who have never felt Mars' reality.

Killraven has been here before and has faced his foes! As the sound of thunder roars endlessly from the charging mounts, the others temporarily forget their newfound ability of flight. The young Martian moves in protest, scarcely understanding what it is to which he is objecting. It appears to Carmilla Frost that the Martian is trying to stop the charge! As Killraven asks if she can enter the Martian's mind and find out, the race continues with a predetermined outcome. The young Martian knows he cannot possibly intercept them in time! The silver star thrown by Killraven finds its target in a now-solid and vulnerable Martian throat! The Martian rider and his mount crash to the crimson dust. Their race has ended.

Killraven meets the next threat with a thrown silver star -- and the young Martian stares at the damage down to his right tentacle! The Freemen have sought flight -- and fly only so far. Their trampoline escape will have to do for those who lack wings. The young Martian's emerald blood vanished in the crimson dust. The older Martian does not console his companion. The younger Martian no longer notices his elder. The older Martian points his tentacles towards the immunization incubators and asks his young companion if he still wants mercy for these Earthlings? The immunization ward was cracked by the explosion of the wall! The earth microbes have infected the damp forms that swim in the innoculative fluids. The younger Martian witnesses their deaths and does not mourn! Carmilla Frost has seen Killraven accomplish one thing properly this evening! He has gone back into the young Martian's mind! The young Martian who came at them -- and Carmilla was right -- they have lost more than they have won! They must endure this defeat in victory! The red dust legacy... blows in the wind... and bequeaths to their descendants, the ability to hate... it is a heritage the Martians born on Earth will perpetuate with no difficulty whatsoever.

On the cover of Amazing Adventures #36, Carmilla Frost is determined to end the War of the Worlds with the death of Killraven!

I've enjoyed Don McGregor's runs on Black Panther in Jungle Action and Killraven in Amazing Adventures.

Sonny Trinidad also drew Skull the Slayer for Marvel Comics.

The red dust flows through Killraven's hands and he is reminded of moments in time that are lost forever.

 2019 was forty-three years away in 1976.

Craig Russell's art reminds me of Gil Kane's in places, especially in the beginning sequences where Killraven finds himself on Mars.

2019 is now only five years away.

Thanks to Dave Hunt, Killraven has got some color in his cheeks.

M'Shulla's smile is enough to dispel any questions about where his mud-brother keeps getting replacements for his silver stars.

Killraven and his band of Freemen suffered a death in the family with the loss of Hawk and Grok.

The Martian complex reminds me of the Krells' base in "Forbidden Planet".

The Martians now know of the tree of life and death.

Killraven has taught them about the emotion of fear and of hatred.

The young Martian sought to cut them off at the chase, but got his tentacle caught at the star thing's line.

It is the year 2018.  The eighteenth year of the War of the Worlds.  The
lives of the hunted, pursued by Martian masters and their overlords, who
now reside within terran buildings for their own purposes.  The catacombs
beneath Washington D.C. are home to the half human-half rodent mutation
known as Rattack and his brethren -- including the vampire bats who swoop
in through the cavern at Killraven and the Freemen.  M'Shulla is certain
that the bats are thirsting for human blood, and his mud-brother knows
this to be so.

In 2018, the White House is now the central command of the Martians.
With the end of the year, and 2019 on the horizon, the man-eaters are
determined to fill their bellies to the utmost.  Old Skull tells Mr.
Killraven not to worry, his club will crack open their heads.  The
red-haired leader does not hear these words, with his own sword slicing
through the bats' bellies.  The Clonal Man, Grok, continues to follow
Carmilla Frost just as Old Skull follows him.  As he stabs another of the
bats, M'Shulla wants K.R. to admit that Carmilla can be trusted, then
tells Mint Julep to be careful if she wishes to continue to lead the
Freewomen.  The emerald-skinned woman with white tresses tells the
Freeman to worry about himself, with her star-piercer gun's projectiles
meeting an airborne bat head-on.  The sounds of wings continue to be
heard -- as one of the carnivores lands behind Carmilla Frost, and
screeches into her ears.  Her head is yanked back, and she can smell the
warm saliva dripping from the nocturnal predator.  As hungry fangs poise
for her throat, the girl screams for Grok.

M'Shulla hears her screams -- and loosens a shaft from his crossbow...
aware that if it should miss its target, Carmilla Frost will never speak
to him again.  Seconds later, the shaft makes its way through the air --
and drives itself deep within the creature's neck.  The girl was
impressed by the incredible shot, but the mud-brother was less than
impressed.  He had been aiming for its stomach, not its neck.  Mint Julep
finds the doorway into the ancient archives, and tells Killraven to bring
his group together.  This place will shelter them until they are able to
reach the dyna-gliders.  While M'Shulla guards the door, the leader of
the Freemen guards his flank.  After a time, the two groups are now
safely within the stone walls.  Knowing that tonight is New Year's Eve,
Carmilla suggests that they celebrate the holiday, but Killraven is not
interested... until the mud-brother suggests that they can use a break.
They could certainly use a happy new year now.

The security sensory monitors hidden throughout the catacombs relay their
information to the computer tapes within the Martian-controlled White
House.  Although the Martian Overlord can communicate telepathically, he
prefers to rely on his audio-transmutors to issue verbal commands to the
human slaves before him.  While one slave retrieves the location
coordinates, the vis-com operator brings up Abraxas on the screen before
him.  Slave Gor recalls that it was the genetic freak who had caught him,
and had auctioned him off to the Martians.  Abraxas is informed about the
activation of the sensory-monitors within the catacombs, and is told by
the Martian Overlord that it could not be Rattack.  The indicators reveal
the presence of humans, and Killraven is to be captured alive, so that he
may be killed by the Overlord's own hand.  The previous evening saw their
failure, but tonight, the collective spirit of humanity will be
overthrown by the death of the Freeman.  Abraxas commands Sabre to bring
his cavaliers together, with the would-be buccaneer telling him to keep
his limbs away from him.

The files within the room have covered events now long-gone.  The
information is blurry -- and are the remnants of a past system.
Killraven believes that the girl has proven to be a positive influence on
the mud-brother, but Carmilla is convinced that M'Shulla possesses his
own mind. She then asks him to address her by her name.  Since she wants
to have a celebration in the middle of the insanity -- the red-haired
leader agrees that they may only have one night left before leaving
Washington D.C.  His hand reaches for an unknown object... reel-to-reel
tapes, much older than the current audiovisual variety.  These must be
from a time when the people trusted their politicians -- but he wonders
what they would have given for the elaborate electronics systems being
used by the Martians.  Although Killraven believes that the tapes are of
no value, Carmilla believes that they would make excellent streamers.

In the dimly lit caverns, Rattack inspects the fallen rodents sliced by
the Freeman's sword.  Their blood have long since grown cold.  He is
unaware that it's New Year's Eve, but there is sorrow within his heart.
When he was first mutated by the Martians, Rattack thought he would go
mad, but the obligations of this former secret serviceman are now dim
memories, too.  He remembers walking alongside the dark limousines with
their closed curtains, but now the loss he feels is for his brethren.
Rattack moves as one driven -- and his rodent troops continue in motion,
their bony sinews crackling along the misbegotten floors -- and several
noses follow the scent with one goal.  The death of Killraven.

There is very little cheer to be found among the Freemen and Freewomen,
as they count down the seconds to 2019.  There is no music as they wait
for the ball to drop on 2018.  There is no longer any need for
noisemakers, as each person chooses to pass the time in silence.  Hawk
drives his knife into the crude drawing of a Martian, eager to press on
against the aliens in Washington D.C.  Old Skull hears the anger in his
friend's words, and Killraven tells the Navajo to calm down if he wishes
to live a bit longer.  Carmilla Frost has seen the years pass her by,
with the future a terror to be discovered, and her past far from being a
safe haven.  Her father died at the hands of the Martians, and she was
locked in with his corpses, while the murderers howled laughter through
the scope-optics.  Their laughter and her tears are the moments from her
past which will never end.

Sabre leaps through the doorway, the flintlock laser firing at a selected
target.  SSSKARKK!  He will have their surrender or their deaths.
Killraven is already in motion, leaping onto the table, but his left arm
is seared by the laser burst.  Old Skull stands ready to defend Mr.
Killraven, but Sabre threatens to cause the red-haired head to part ways
along all of the walls, and Old Skull... understands this...

The leader of the cavaliers knows that the Freeman hates him, but it is
he who is the hunter, not the hunted.  Sabre finds no joy in this battle,
nor any drink to quench the bitterness of this victory.  Mint Julep
threatens to disarm a cavalier if his hands should wander too close.  As
they make their way through the catacombs, each of them hears a sound off
in the distance.  The cavaliers and their captives make haste -- with
Rattack and his troop revealing themselves as the source of the noise.
After finding the archives empty, they follow the blood trail left by
Killraven's wounded arm.

The Lincoln Memorial is surrounded by electrostatic barbed wire, but the
monument continues to wait... as if for retribution to finally arrive.
The Martian Overlord is pleased with Abraxas, now that Sabre has
delivered Killraven before him.  Even among the Martians, the Overlord is
regarded as a superior, and the lone human is nothing to him.  The leader
of the Freemen listens as the Martian Overlord reprimands him for defying
their invasion on the Mural Phonics Systems... and his spirit has served
to inspire the human garbage to rebel.  The laughter will die... It is
then that the Overlord sees an uninvited guest making his entrance, with
his brothers feeding on those who would keep them from their goal.
Rattack is caught in the twin tendrils of Abraxas, who tells the mutation
that his usefulness to the Martians is now at an end.

ZZZ CCHHRISSPP!!  In seeking to prevent any last-minute escapes, the
Overlord unleashes a thermal nuclear radiation burst to incinerate
Killraven, but the Freeman manages to dodge the slow-moving armored
figure, and one of Sabre's men is not so lucky.  The statue done by
Daniel Chester French seems to be rising to its feet, as two beings
separated by different time periods now act as one.  His sword keeps two
more cavaliers at bay, with more on the way.  The Martian Overlord points
his metallic finger towards Killraven's back, with the anticipation of
seeing the molten stream bursting through human flesh once more.

Before this can occur, Sabre fires his laser weapon at the armored
Overlord, who regards it as a toy.  Nevertheless, a column has been
splintered by laser-fire, and the rest occurs in slow motion.  The
monument shakes with anticipation, as the columns are unable to stand the
strain.  Shadows are seen as the masonry continues to fall, and the
statue's face continues to wait for the moment of atonement.  The
Martian's site for a perfect auction block has just come undone, and it
would appear to be the Martian underlings who are to be crushed, not the
human spirit as intended.  Rattack is torn free from the tentacled
embrace of Abraxas.  The suction grip has succeeded in causing flesh to
yield in many places.  The warmth of his own blood provided the coldest
of comforts, as the scavengers descend upon him, and his brethren begin
to feed upon him.

Abraxas listens to the screams of Rattack, knowing that mankind's shrine
has become one of despair, and could be done so again.  As the thought of
Killraven being sacrificed upon just such an altar occurs to him, he is
caught in more of the falling masonry.  Bronze eyes do not burn with
hatred, nor are tears shed from stone cheeks, but the devastation is
complete with the balancing from the great equalizer.  The slave auctions
are now over, and it will be a while before the Martian Overlord will be
able to fully extricate himself from its ruins.  Sabre has made good his
escape, and they may yet see the cavalier again.  As the shadows fall
upon the remains of the Lincoln Memorial, the stone gaze falls upon the
new graffiti left by the Freemen... "Killraven Was Here".

On the cover of Amazing Adventures #24 by Rich Buckler and Klaus Janson,
Killraven is about to unleash an unchained melody upon the armored head
of the Martian Overlord, and those aren't atomic flames of burning love
coming towards the Freeman.

As a six-year old in 1974, I would have loved to have seen a Killraven
and his Freeman line of Mego toys, complete with requisite play set.

The art by Herb Trimpe and Jack Abel was deemed accessible by me at a
young age, and there are many happy memories from reading these stories.

Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan's Tomb of Dracula had Blade the Vampire
Hunter, while Don McGregor's War of The Worlds had M'Shulla and his
trusty crossbow.

The armored Martian Overlord reminds me of the Shogun Warriors toys which
would come out in 1979.

On the New Year's Eve of 2018, Killraven and his band of Freemen come
across the long-lost Watergate Tapes.

In the year of 2005, the world finally learns the identity of "Deep
Throat".

Another half human-half rodent which springs to mind is Vermin by J.M.
DeMatteis and Mike Zeck in the pages of Captain America in the early
1980s.

Hawk has his ponytail in a knot over the Martians.

In this corner... the challenger... Abraxas.  In this corner... the
champion... Abraham Lincoln.

In the "Amazing Mails" letters page, we learn that "Washington Nightmare"
was supposed to be a book-length story, but a top level decision cut the
number of pages of War of The Worlds to give it more of a chance of
breaking even with its costs and survival on the stands.  With that
sudden decision, Don would have three pages for the demolishing of the
Lincoln Memorial, Abraxas' defeat, and Killraven's meeting with Sabre.
This was how the continued story came to be.  And this, as Steve Gerber
would say, is the "Making of a Madman".

Marv Wolfman writes:

"Dear Don, Herb, Frank, and Charlotte;

The latest issue of WAR OF THE WORLDS was simply INCREDIBLE.  It was the
very BEST issue of WAR OF THE WORLDS since Marv Wolfman's issue, though,
to be truthful, I wish Marv was back on the book."

The letter armadillo replies:

"Dear Marv,

You wish WHO was back on the book?
Wolfman who?
Oh, MARV Wolfman.
Okay.  We'll bite.  Who's Marv Wolfman?"

This review is dedicated to Don McGregor.

Killraven and the Freemen have reached the Suwannee River, Okefenokee
National Wildlife Refuge on New Year's Eve, 2020, and find their
collective reputations have already proceeded them.  They have been
mistaken for common vagabonds, with Brother Axe about to test the sum and
substance of the legend with his chosen weapon.

Killraven strikes back by kicking his would-be assailant to the swampy
floor.  They have spent three days passing through a marsh filled with
flesh-eating insects, and the red-haired leader of the Freemen is not
about to fall onto someone's axe.  Brother Axe is not about to have his
people and land taken over by vagabonds, but then, he's not in a position
to do much of anything at the moment.  After insisting that they put the
legends aside, Killraven asserts his identity, and insists that they
speak matters in more pleasant surroundings.  Blood, either theirs or
his, need not be spilled today.

Brother Axe need not worry, for Huey and Louie are ready to deal with the
wandering vagabond, and his friends.  As they prepare to charge
Killraven, Old Skull decides to stop watching, and bring their two heads
together.  As the duo are knocked senseless, more of their number have
come forward, but they are stopped by the sight of M'Shulla's crossbow
aimed at their hearts.  Carmilla Frost takes out one more straggler, and
sends him crashing into the bushes with a single punch.

Inside the refuge, Killraven is grateful for his friends' contributions
to the discussion.  Brother Axe admits his error, and in their isolation,
they have met their share of enemies in the form of strangers.  The
wildlife preserve had been bypassed by the Martians in 2001.  Brother Axe
believes that this was due to the impenetrability of the Okefenokee
Swamp.  A feast has been prepared for Killraven and his Freemen, with Old
Skull helping in the kitchen.  Brother Axe also wishes to thank the
red-haired leader for not having him lose face, or his head, for that
matter.  The Freeman understands the leader's duty to the protection of
his people, and sees nothing further to fight about.  Killraven and his
band will be leaving soon, but Brother Axe might be able to help them
before they leave.  They had been heading for a place known as
Yellowstone, but were unable to find it.  Both this and their recent
departure from the Martian Death-Birth stronghold has driven them from
their goal.  The red-haired leader of the Freemen confides to Brother Axe
that it's very rare for Carmilla Frost to own up to a mistake.

Unfortunately for them, Brother Axe does not know the location of
Yellowstone.  Carmilla does know how to keep track of the time, but this
is something that Killraven would rather not know about.  Old Skull
enters with their meal.  CRUNCH!  CRACK!  ZLUP!  Soon, all present bear
witness to the Freeman's delight at the quality of his food.  As they
dine, Brother Axe begins to speak about a legend concerning a mysterious
woman with butterfly wings.  As Old Skull greets a hungry raccoon,
Killraven learns about the legends regarding himself and the Freemen.  He
knows that even during a meal such as this, the Martians are waiting to
conquer those remaining on the planet... and to deprive them of their
sense of purpose.  As both he and Brother Axe sample the roast, the
little bandit receives a treat from Old Skull.

After learning from Carmilla Frost that a new year is almost upon them,
Killraven begins to speak about the arena, a place where one enters, but
may not leave alive.  It was in such an arena at Madison Square Garden
that both he and Old Skull fought for their lives against Warr.  It is at
this point that his friend decides to interrupt the story.  Knowing that
a tale must have a beginning, Old Skull tells them about a time before
the Martians came... a time when people were trained not in arenas, but
in schools.  The schools had the students seated in cubicles, and being
taught how to think.  Killraven is about to mention the part about
Warr... but Old Skull is focused on events from 1997.  The teachers were
the ones who changed the picture set tapes, while the children were the
ones who called Old Skull "retarded."  He has never forgotten that word,
and sees that the little bandit wants some wine to drink, the Freeman
continues to tell Mr. Killraven's story.

The children who mocked Old Skull were mean, and he wasn't able to use a
weapon on anyone.  He had to learn to live with their laughter, and only
would fight if either there was no choice or if his loved ones were
threatened.  Both school and home were his arenas.  The ranch was his
home, where cattle were raised to become steaks for people to eat.  Old
Skull's father was a cowboy who knew that his time was coming to an end.
He remembers the day when his father was going to put Randy the calf out
to pasture.  With not enough grass to eat, they were running out of land.
The father reminded his son that they ate meat, and were fighting for
their way of life.  The cowboy had wondered if the boy had sided with
those who were trying to run them out of business.  With the science of
hydroponics, chemicals were used to create food, and the grazing land was
becoming scarce.  The calf would have to go, and Old Skull knew that
Randy had been the only one not to laugh at him.  He was unable to fight
at school or at home.  Both were arenas in which he had lost, and wept
with each breath.

The calf was gone, Old Skull was still there, but the ranch was dying.
It had been about three or four years later when the last of the steers
were herded towards the trade-line conveyors.  It was now the year 2001.
He remembers how his father rode the rawhider, a flying machine which
could never throw him.  CLIPITY-CLOP-CLIPITY-CLOP!  After a cattle drive,
a cowboy would take care of the horse he rode.  His men know that this
was the last drive, which is why it seemed so real to them, and why they
haven't had much to eat as they once did.  The old days are over, and the
flying rawhider could never take the place of a real horse.  All that
remains is a machine, with the wires torn out.

Old Skull had walked into the sunset with his father, the last one they'd
see together.  Upon hearing this, Killraven starts to tell them about the
Madison Square Garden Arena match of 2010.  They had stood together in
the shadows, waiting for Warr to arrive, but -- Old Skull interrupts his
friend once again.  The leader of the Freemen also sees that the raccoon
wants to drink some of his wine, then changes its mind.  Old Skull was
fourteen years old in 2001.  They followed the cattle on a solar-powered
transparent tramway.  WHACKETA WHACK!  The father pats his son on the
back, on their final ride, and comments that the boy hadn't done much
with the ranch.  He knows that when the numbskull wants to taste some
prime beef, and can't get it, maybe he'll understand what they are about
to lose.  Then again, maybe he won't.  The cowboy looks at his son, and
suspects that they may have much in common than he can reckon.  The
father wonders if they will both come out of the tunnel, and see one
another in the light of day.

As the solar-powered tram makes its way out of the tunnel, they are both
now in the light, but the cowboy isn't so sure that they're seeing one
another.  The boy's gaze is directed elsewhere, towards the advancing
Martian tripods, and the crimson rays which struck down their trans
conveyor on Invasion Day.  Those who were still alive were taken as
prisoners, but the dead were of no use to the Martians, who left them
where they lay.  Killraven thinks about himself and his brother, if they
had shared words with one another, then he doesn't remember it.  He hopes
to change this when they arrive at Yellowstone Park.  The time has come
for the arena, with Warr and his legion of spiders.  The creatures were
only matched by the Martian's ultimate gladiator called Warr.  A scar had
been torn from his right temple, along the right eye, through the nose,
and down the length of the left cheek.  His Martian masters had given him
a sword with nuclear flame, and webbing which could burn on contact.
There was no escape from the arena, for if a gladiator left its
boundaries, the lasers would destroy them.  Killraven and Old Skull could
only wait for their death to come within range, and it soon would.

Old Skull points out to Mr. Killraven that he hasn't mentioned how they
had met.  As Brother Axe sees that his glass of wine is strangely empty,
the Freeman speaks about 2014, and the time before he entered the arena.
Old Skull was eating his gruel when three other gladiators came towards
him.  One of them kicked the bowl, leaving the gruel onto his pants.  He
then takes the bowl and places it on "Numbskull's" head.

HA-HA-H URK!  The gladiator's laughter is short lived when he finds his
throat seized from behind.  UGHINUH!  The newcomer is eager to have the
bully try his tricks on him... and have one less gladiator to deal with
in the arena.  The other two try to run to Artemus's aid, but they are as
children, and are easily beaten back by the red-haired warrior.  Not
relinquishing his grip on Artemus, he manages to extract a sincere
apology from the bully, who will clean up the mess he made.  He will keep
his tongue in his head or else.  Since they are about to enter the arena
together, Killraven introduces himself to his new friend.  Since he
realizes that the bald man has knowledge which the others will never
understand, the red-haired warrior dubs him... "Old Skull."  The taller
man rises and after a firm handshake, Killraven sees that he's is pleased
with his new name.

The time has come for Mr. Killraven to tell them about Warr and the
creepy spiders.  The leader of the Freemen is not sure that he can
remember what happened. Old Skull offers to tell the story, but the
memories have returned to his friend.  The unseen Martians in the
audience never made a sound... and the coming of Warr.  Armed with his
flaming sword and spiked shield, Warr meets with Killraven, the newbie on
the gladiator circuit.  If one of them is to die in the arena, it will
not be Warr.  His prowess in earlier matches had attracted the attention
of the Martians, but his newfound friend now finds himself in trouble.
Killraven is unimpressed by Warr's concern for their well being, and
turns his attention towards the giant spiders.

SLICE!  One spider is no match for Killraven's sword.  CRAACK!  Old Skull
is not on the menu.  ZZSS  COOOSH!  The spider retreats from the arena,
and right into the path of the waiting lasers.  Their back-to-back tactic
has proven effective, but Old Skull admits to Mr. Killraven that the
spiders do scare him.  He notices that his friend likes his new name, and
is okay with being called simply "Killraven."  Seeing how well they
fight, Warr is eager to perform, and prove his own worth to the Martians.
His webbing is capable of burning upon contact with human flesh... but
Killraven needs nothing to remind him of this fact.  The battle is to be
between himself and Warr.

The red-haired warrior is able to cut through the webbing before it can
burn his leg, then uses his sword to counter the approaching Warr.  His
sword clangs against the spiked shield, and he ducks beneath the flaming
arc from the nuclear-powered sword.  Twin lasers fire just out of range,
as Killraven stands his ground, and Warr is determined to drive his
opponent out of the arena.  Beads of sweat fall onto his face, as his
feet are in danger of passing over the edge.

It is Old Skull who flings Warr away from Mr. Killraven.  As they watch
the flaming sword come into contact with the giant spider, the red-haired
warrior asks why his newfound friend has interfered in the personal
fight.  Old Skull has wanted to help Mr. Killraven, but Warr knows that
only their deaths will satisfy the Martians.  They will not become
performers for aliens, and take their leave of the frustrated audience.
WHUCK!  Old Skull congratulates Mr. Killraven on his fine storytelling
with a slap on the back.  Brother Axe offers up a toast to Killraven and
his Freemen, but they are unable to drink, and see that all of their
glasses of wine are empty.  URP!  The little bandit has drunk more than
his fair share, and is now making his exit.

On the cover of Amazing Adventures #37, the cover blurbs promise the
reader, "At Last!  The Startling Origin Of The Man Called Old Skull!"
"You Dare Not Miss.. Arena Kill!"  Caught in the clutches of a giant
spider, Killraven dare not miss with his trusty sword, and the fangs of
the blood-colored arachnid.

On the inside front cover, there is an advertisement from Spalding about
its Top Flite Basketball and the 1976 Olympics.

Huey and Louie learn that their skulls together are no match for Old
Skull.

M'Shulla makes certain that the other Junior Woodchucks see his point
when it comes to retreat.

On another page, we can see "who's smiling now" from a LaSalle graduate.

The Marsh are rather mellow folk, and know how to light up a fire for a
meal.

Before there was "Smokey And The Bandit," there was Old Skull and the
Raccoon.

On another page, the Spider-Man Ring, the result of space-age technology,
and moody NASA technicians is advertised.  No wonder the wall-crawler's
emotions ran the gamut of the entire spectrum.

When it came to school, Old Skull was in a class by himself.

Although he and his family ate meat, Old Skull knew that the food-to-be
had a life of its own, just as he had.

On another page, we got Marvel T-Shirts for the discriminating reader.

Even the rawhider machine didn't show Old Skull's father much respect.

I wonder what would have happened if Old Skull had died, but his father
had lived.  How would things have been different if it was the cowboy who
would be met by Killraven in the arena?

Warr has a yellow tunic, with red pants, and yellow flame designs on
them.

From the Mighty Marvel Checklist:

Captain Marvel #45: Cap must fight to free himself from the mind of Rick
Jones in one of the most senses-shattering sagas ever!

Howard The Duck #4: Cleveland's web-footed good-deed-doer might enter
"The Sleep Of The Just" thanks to the Winkey-Man- and he may never wake
up again!

Marvel Team-Up #47: The ever-lovin' blue-eyed Thing and the wall-crawlin'
Spider-Man together again in the continuation of the Basilisk brouhaha as
both Ben Grimm and Peter Parker say "I Have To Fight The Basilisk!

Iron Man #88: Our golden gladiator enters into a death-duel with the
Blood Brothers!  Happy and Pepper quit Stark Industries!  All this and
more!

Amazing Adventures #37: Don't miss the origin of Old Skull as he and
Killraven battle to the death in Madison Square Garden in the tale titled
"Arena Kill!"

Fantastic Four #172: It's a "Journey to Counter Earth" as the world's
greatest super-team goes with Gorr, the Golden Gorilla to our planetary
twin to save it from Galactus!  PLUS: A breath-taking battle between the
Thing and the Destroyer!"

out of the vacuum of space when he meets "The Thing From The Black Hole
Star" in this novel-length extravaganza.

Master of Kung-Fu Annual #1: Shang-Chi, Master of Kung-Fu, and Iron Fist,
the Living Weapon, team-up to invade "The Fortress of S'Ahra-Sham!"

Werewolf By Night #39: Jack Russell's alter-ego teams up with Brother
Voodoo, the man who dies yet lives again, when Wolfie's weirdest foe
returns to plague his furry life once more!

From the above checklist, one gets the feeling that Killraven and Old
Skull were going to be the ones fighting each other to the death.

In the letters page, we learn that sales went down on the first issue
that bore the name KILLRAVEN, not WAR OF THE WORLDS.

We also learn that the cross-country trek being made by Killraven and the
Freemen was far from aimless.

On another page, Victor Von Doom urges readers to subscribe to FOOM and
become a friend of Ol' Marvel.

On another page, kids could sell GRIT to folks for 25 cents and win neat
prizes, such as bicycles, watches, telescopes, sleeping bags, bracelets,
basketballs, scuba masks, baseballs, baseball mitts, baseball bats, movie
cameras, football helmets, footballs, and transistor radios.

Me, I'd just keep on reading the Still Only 25 cents issue of Amazing
Adventures, with Killraven and his band of Freemen.  In other words,
"Kiss my GRIT!"

Old Skull is bowled over with gratitude over the arrival of Mr.
Killraven.

Artemus is numb with fear at the possibility of someone who can fight
back.

After meeting with Old Skull, Killraven is all shook up.

In the flashback story, the red-haired warrior is wearing his original
costume, while on the cover, he is wearing his regular fighting togs.

While beef is what's for dinner, Old Skull is certainly not on the menu
for any creepy-crawling spiders.

Like his father, Old Skull is master of the back-slap.

Although Killraven and the Freemen are given a toast, it is the bandit
who gets away with the wine.

They have come from the city of Atlanta to the local cemetery, and see
what has been buried over time -- or if not buried, those soon-to-be.
Atlanta, Georgia is now gone with the wind -- and as with Rhett Butler --
the Martians didn't give a damn, either.  Even in such a deserted area,
there are still people to be found among the ruins of a manmade city.

He had sensed their arrival, but was not aware that they were none other
than Killraven and the Freemen.  M'Shulla eyes the woman, while the
red-haired leader senses her grief.  She wonders who has come for her
this time.  His mother still harbors fear towards his father, unabated
since his arrival into this new world.  For Emmanuel, all this had
occurred a lifetime ago... a mere seven hours in human terms.  His mother
senses their presence and wonders if they'll release her from the pain.
It is far too late for salvation, for the son of G'rath now lives.  From
her body it came -- and now has come into being at the stroke of
midnight.  With the morning, the child will seek out its own father.  All
this doesn't make much sense to Old Skull, nor to his friends, either.
The woman speaks in riddles, and now runs from unseen demons.

Emmanuel watches as his mother tries to leave the cemetery, and knows the
desperation that comes from being the 24-Hour Man. While her husband is
elsewhere, she has a chance to escape.  Carmilla wonders if they've lost
sight of her, but Killraven still has her in sight.  It has been nine
months since G'rath brought her to this place.  Nine months with him
standing over her... waiting for the birth of his spawn.  Now -- when he
comes back -- she'll... be... gone.  Her face now reflects the terror of
discovery.  It is her terror that her son has come to know quite well.
Father and son are as one.  Her terror of one is as much as for the
other.

TIME, CONTINUITY, SEQUENCE... 07:20.  The Mud-Brother warns his friend to
be cautious, but Killraven finds that to be obvious.  As the woman fears
her husband's touch, their son watches, and waits for the proper time to
act.  His eyes soon shift towards the lone woman in the group.  The
red-hair had called her, Carmilla Frost.  The leader of the Freeman tells
the Mud-Brother to keep out of his eye-line, but M'Shulla believes that
Killraven is having an attack of nerves.  Emmanuel sees that they are
trying to kill his father.  Although attacked, G'rath is more than
capable of defending himself.  TH-WHACK!  SU-WHUCK  The Mud-Brother's
hairstyle will never be the same again.  Killraven compliments him on his
new look, while M'Shulla is grateful to still have his own scalp.  Their
adversary is about to launch a second attack.  Emmanuel knows this, of
course, and will seize the opportunity in taking the woman.

TIME, CONTINUITY, SEQUENCE... 0:723.  G'rath has been injured.  Their
weaponry have wounded him, and Emmanuel shares his father's pain.  It
must be ignored, and the son must fulfill his primary life-role.
Carmilla sees that the green creature is backing away from their attack,
as are her friends.  He reaches out and touches her hand.  Emmanuel has
no time to appreciate the new sensation, with his father in danger, the
spines are released from the left arm.  The Freemen turn to see their new
opponent.  From the looks of them, these strange projectiles could slice
each of them in two.  Killraven can now appreciate the nature of the
woman's madness, and warns Old Skull to stay clear of the danger.

TIME, CONTINUITY, SEQUENCE... 07:27.  His father's attackers have fled.
Emmanuel is now able to experience things first hand.  He will speak to
Carmilla Frost and soothe her.  This will enable him to fulfill his
needs.  If the green skinned man in the golden armor does not release
her, she will tear open his head.  Emmanuel is able to speak... about his
race... which continues... and ends with him.  She is to become part of
its future.  The passions of his race are known to Emmanuel -- but he had
never kissed a woman before.  In seeking the experience -- he finds anger
in its place instead.  M'Shulla sees what is happening to Carmilla, and
is determined to get through the creature if he must.  Emmanuel feels
pity for the Freeman, for the woman, and for himself.  He has no other
choice, but Carmilla Frost continues to fight him, as he carries her away
from sight.

TIME, CONTINUITY, SEQUENCE... 07:33.  He seeks her embrace, but the woman
resists him.  The rain is a new sensation, one which was present at his
birth, and now seeks to chill his flesh.  With his father taking care of
them, he flees with the woman.  Killraven is confident that Carmilla will
prove to be the death of his Mud-Brother.  As the creature reaches out
towards M'Shulla, he decides that this may just be the day.  Both tumble
out of the way of the falling stone.  The Mud-Brother wants his friend to
keep the thing distracted, while he goes after Carmilla.  Killraven would
be happy to oblige -- but it has disappeared from sight.  Old Skull has
seen what had happened to it.  He tells Mr. Killraven that it just went
"poof."  The red-haired leader asks if it vanished, and Old Skull says
that it really did happen that way.

TIME, CONTINUITY SEQUENCE... 08:09.  M'Shulla has following the trail
with such eagerness, that Killraven wonders if he's looking forward to
meeting the creature again.  With the deaths of Grok and Hawk, the
Mud-Brother is in no mood to lose any more of his friends.  That was the
day he learned how they could be beaten by the Martians.  When his friend
insists that they will never be beaten, M'Shulla admits that he's lost
that loving feeling he used to have.  Carmilla has changed his
Mud-Brother, and not for the better.  His concern for Carmilla is a
strength, not a weakness.  M'Shulla has changed, and has discovered the
strength of commitment, a new type of courage for him.  Killraven is
cheered by his friend's words, and the Mud-Brother is glad to hear it.

TIME, CONTINUITY SEQUENCE... 08:21.  M'Shulla wishes that Killraven would
be able to seek out the location of Carmilla's abductor, as he has sensed
the Martians on past occasions.  This ability was given to him by Keeper
Whitman, but the training had been far from thorough.  As Old Skull
mutters that they could be walking around for hours, Killraven admits
that his clairsentience is random in nature.  It is an ability which he
must develop, and not the other way around.  This is something he had
decided long ago, with no aid from Carmilla Frost.  It is he who sees the
skeletal figure they had discovered earlier.  The woman was kneeling over
it when they had arrived, but now it lacks the uniform it wore.  It is
this same attire that is now being used by their opponent.  All that
concerns M'Shulla is that they find Carmilla before anything else
happens.  The moment comes when they fade off into the distance, then
they will be alone, and Emmanuel will remove his hand from the woman's
mouth.  They will be alone together... until his father returns.  The son
would not care to think about that.  His mother had cried... but he sees
no tears in Carmilla's eyes... while he himself has never known the sting
of tears.

TIME, CONTINUITY SEQUENCE... 08:57.  Emmanuel has never known loss, nor
has he found much else in his brief life thus far.  In death, he may
learn more.  The woman wonders what to make of his cryptic words.  The
lightning above reveals their position, but little else.  His is too
brief a time for riddles.  He senses no fear from Carmilla, and since his
birth at midnight, he has known nothing but hurt.  His mother was the one
who ran from them.  Emmanuel has not the time for self-discovery of the
soul and such.  She listens to his ravings, and learns of his race's
survival instinct.  G'rath has returned, and is the key for Emmanuel's
survival.  Carmilla Frost has been chosen to become the mother of their
entire race.  She greets this particular honor with horror.

TIME, CONTINUITY SEQUENCE... 09:03.  Father and son are as one.  Through
mental effort, they can be as one.  Together.  Even though they are
apart, they cannot survive without the other, and must serve each other's
needs.  G'rath provides his son with the energy he needs to live a
24-hour life span.  This will be his one day of life.  By midnight, he
will be gone... consumed by his body's metabolism.  Before this occurs, a
mate must be found for his father.  After the deed is done, G'rath will
watch over her, as he has with Emmanuel's mother, until the time that
their child is born-- the new recipient of their collective knowledge.
He knows that this shall occur with his son and his -- 24-Hour Man to
24-Hour Man -- forever.  If she manages to break free, Carmilla
guarantees that Emmanuel will meet his end before the midnight deadline.
She will not become anyone's pawn, and he will not live to seize the day.
As he holds her, Carmilla's hair tickles his cheek as his father stands
over them.  He now sees the seeds of terror beginning to fill her eyes...
and knows that it will remain there always.

TIME, CONTINUITY SEQUENCE... 09:12.  The shadow of G'rath falls upon
them, and the mausoleum where Emmanuel spent his first three hours of
life.  He wonders if the stone guardians have come to life, as Killraven
kicks out towards him from above.  He had listened to Carmilla's threats,
and knows that the Mud-Brother needn't have worried about her safety.
Emmanuel has no time for jokes, and lifts the leader of the Freemen above
him.  SKRAK!  Killraven has interrupted the ritual, and he pays for it by
being hurtled through a window.  The pain has returned to him, and
Emmanuel knows that his father is being attacked once more.  Both G'rath
and M'Shulla are skilled at releasing their shafts, but the Mud-Brother's
arrows do little damage.

TIME, CONTINUITY SEQUENCE... 09:21.  Killraven had planned their
first-attack, with M'Shulla providing his support.  The son feels his
father's pain.  Emmanuel wonders when their lives had grown complicated.
During his fourth hour of life, things had been much simpler.  At his
ninth hour, he has discovered that simplicity is but an illusion, and the
past can never be reclaimed again.  Father and son confront their
destiny, with the rain passing over Emmanuel, and then through him.  He
wants to laugh at the Freemen, but he is now in transition -- and is
unable to do so.  Skar had given Old Skull many nightmares, but Old Skull
will not be able to sleep for some time.  Carmilla Frost assures their
friends that what was said by the 24-Hour Man must be the truth.  As they
watch Emmanuel and G'rath fade from sight, each of them learn that there
can be truth in riddles.

TIME, CONTINUITY SEQUENCE... 17:13.  KRRAARCK!  Killraven and the Freemen
are in search of shelter from the storm.  They have not found their
opponent, but if this is where Emmanuel's ancestor now rests, he may
return there soon.  Carmilla wonders what they will do if he does return.
Emmanuel cannot be saved, nor could any of his race prior to him.  Their
bodies lie unmourned, and their memories reside in the flesh of their
descendant.  Even now, she cannot hate him, but sensed his vulnerable
position.  Killraven found him far from defenseless when he was sent
crashing through the window.  When they had spoken, he had felt a common
link -- as if they shared a common curse.  KRAAAWW  KRACK!  The rainfall
is all they have in common -- and the sounds of thunder overhead mocks
them.

TIME, CONTINUITY SEQUENCE... 17:20.  Father and son have reappeared, as
Emmanuel now rides atop G'rath.  Although his time has not yet come, the
24-Hour Man's voice is now etched with desperation.  He asks for Carmilla
Frost to come with him, and bring meaning to his short life span.  He and
his father have no desire to kill them -- but they will do so if
necessary.  Killraven acts, with Emmanuel seeing him as his own personal
demon.  Looking into his eyes, the leader of the Freemen sees much of
himself trapped there, but Emmanuel insists that they have no common
bond.  If the red-haired warrior has come in search of answers, the
24-Hour Man no longer believes that any exist to be found.

TIME, CONTINUITY SEQUENCE... 17:27.  The only answer they seek is his
death... and the death of his entire race.  As Killraven, M'Shulla, and
Old Skull fight with the son, Carmilla fires her weapon at the father.
Now weaponless, she is seized in G'rath's unyielding grip, and Emmanuel
now holds M'Shulla above himself.  In the harsh rain and damp earth,
Carmilla Frost shudders at the thought of what is to come.

TIME, CONTINUITY SEQUENCE... 17:30.  The father now rises at his full
length -- with the storm glistening down his scaly flesh -- but the
emerald flesh is now dead!  The ray-blasts have now had their effect on
G'rath.  And the son knows that the woman had not known how his father
had been in life.  And his sorrow is immense.  Or is it for himself that
Emmanuel feels for?  It is the pain that he now feels.  And without his
father, he must face it alone.  He reaches out towards Carmilla and
pleads with her for his life.  He continues his pleas until only the rain
is left, and his armored uniform rests on the ground with no descendant
to replace him.  Carmilla Frost had been correct... they could not save
Emmanuel by their own needs and natures.  They had been opponents... for
their own survival.  She would have been destroyed... the sane way the
woman had been destroyed.  But it is strange... that they would seem to
share a common curse.  KRAAAWW  KRACK!  But the falling rain is all they
had shared -- and the thunder continues to mock them.

They see that the woman has returned.  They see her and understand her
grief more clearly now.  She senses their presence and hopes that it is
not G'rath, whom she must stay away from.  She wonders if she knows them?
Have they come to... to save her?  They are too late, for she has just
given birth to G'rath's child.  Yes, she has.  Her body had carried it,
yes -- and given it life, yes -- on midnight.  It was midnight when the
child of G'rath came into the world.  And now the night has come again.
The Freemen do not follow her again.  And they have only vague awareness
of what had happened.  Old Skull asks Mr. Killraven what would have
happened if Emmanuel had a child... and it turned out to be a daughter?
And there are still women, even in the cemetery, who can make a man
wonder, and become lost.

On the cover of Amazing Adventures #35 by P. Craig Russell, the cover
blurbs inform us of "The Threat Of The 24-Hour Man!" and promises a
battle between Killraven and the Man-Mutant for the most fantastic prize
of all!

Nowadays, when you mention "The 24-Hour Man," the first thing that people
think of is Kiefer Sutherland.

It turns out that thanks to Don McGregor and P. Craig Russell, Killraven
and the Freemen were the first to use this unique format.  (Sorry about
that, Kiefer.)

Folks who have read Marvel Premiere: Woodgod, Formerly Known As The
Justice League, and Legion Of Super-Heroes are familiar with the name of
Keith Giffen.

The legendary Jack Abel was also known as "Gary Michaels," having inked
Gene Colan pencils on Iron Man in Tales of Suspense.

Another feature lettered by I. Watanabe was Doctor Strange, by Roy Thomas
and Dan Adkins.

Editor Marv Wolfman would later develop his own band of heroes and create
the New Teen Titans.

Don McGregor told me at San Diego a couple of years ago that he and Craig
came up with an idea for a story which would begin and end the same way.
"The 24-Hour Man" was that story, and is one of my favorites.

The sight of a giant reptilian creature with red eyes and flailing
tentacles is enough to freeze anyone in their tracks.

The TIME, CONTINUITY, SEQUENCE... 0720 format is a favorite of mine, too.
No one can accuse this issue of being a ten-minute read on the can.

M'Shulla's probably sore that Emmanuel got to kiss Carmilla Frost before
he had a chance to do so.  Unfortunately for the 24-Hour Man, he gets
carried away, and so does Carmilla.

On page 23, panel seven and page 30, panel eleven, Killraven speaks of
the October rain being all they have in common -- and the sounds of
thunder mocking them!  Luckily for him and the Freemen, the thunder and
lightning do their KRAAAWW and KRACK! right on cue.

Now, I'm not an Armadillo asking for a No-Prize, but I'd like to ask Don
if this was deliberate or did they accidentally use the same panel twice?
If it was the latter, I must say it was a clever way of getting some
mileage out of the particular panel.

Other issues that came out that week from The Mighty Marvel Checklist:

Fantastic Four #168: The Thing becomes Ben Grimm and leaves the FF,
forcing Reed, Sue, and Johnny to search for a new team member in what is
tentatively entitled, "The Replacement."  Guest-starring: Power Man.

The Champions #4: Chris Claremont pinch-scripts the fourth fabulous
team-up of our five fantabulous super-heroes as Hercules and the Black
Widow battle the Ghost Rider, Iceman, and the Angel to prevent a "Murder
At Malibu!"  Be here!

Marvel Team-Up #43: Doctor Doom is drawn back to the Salem Witch Trials
to battle the Black Rider in a timeless Spider-Man tome by Boisterous
Bill Mantlo and Our Pal Sal Buscema titled, "The Past Gone Mad!"  And
don't miss the guest-starring grandeur of the Vision and the Scarlet
Witch!

Captain Marvel #43: Thanos is alive and well, and the Destroyer doesn't
like it one bit.  Steve Englehart and Al Milgrom present an
earth-shattering Captain Marvel battle called "Destroy!  Destroy!"  Plus:
Rick Jones and the mysterious reappearance of Fawn!

Iron Man #84: The Freak returns on "The Night of the Walking Bomb!"  Will
New York survive?  Only Len Wein, Herb Trimpe, and Marie Severin know,
and they're not telling!  They want you to buy the furshlugginer book!

Amazing Adventures #35: Killraven meets "The Twenty-Four Hour Man" - and
it just may be the Warrior of the World's last day on earth!  Don
McGregor, Craig Russell, and surprise artist Keith Giffen serve up this
heartwarming tale of a man and his slug in the 21st Century.

Howard The Duck #2: Steve Gerber, Frank Brunner, and Steve Leialoha
present the somewhat terrifying and often amusing tale (in which a
rapacious root from outer space takes overt he body of Arthur Wilson,
would-be hero) which will undoubtedly cause you to "Cry Turnip!"

Crazy was the magazine that dared to be dumb (and succeeded with flying
colors!)

The Battle Of The Century was advertised... Superman vs The Amazing
Spider-Man.

Joe Weider posed with his famous student, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mr.
Olympia winner, and current governor of California.

There were Marvel-Hero Stick-Ons and Life-Size Movable Hang-Ups of
Spider-Man and Galen from Planet of the Apes.

Marvel was Number One and told Marvelites to keep watchin' for the answer
to Ikaris's identity.

Spider-Man was busy solving the Cupcake Caper by stopping Man-Mountain
Marko.

The next issue would be devoted to "Red Dust Legacy!"

Amazing Adventures #4

OK, obviously it's a judgment call whether one story or issue is
more subpar than the mass of other stuff of the period. I'll
agree "worst-written ever" was too extreme. Still, I think they
were on the lower end for their time period in the sci-fi and horror
fields, not measuring up to EC (obviously), Atlas, Ace, Avon, Ajax-
Farrell, DC, Fiction House--all of which are generally at least
somewhat readable in my opinion. I pulled out my Amazing Adventures
4 for assessment.

1. Cover is great. Major headlights, a bizarre and kinky premise
with a robot being controlled by a little green man seducing an
enraptured and well-endowed blonde. I could have done without the
drool dripping from the alien's mouth, but so be it.

2. The story to go with the cover isn't too bad. Two little green
men on a reconnaissance mission to earth prior to the big invasion
discover that men are "subject to a paralyzing emotion known as
LOVE." They have some unexplained "personal magnetism fluid" that
they inject into two strangely human-looking robots they brought
along (of different genders no less) and instantly all the earth
people of the opposite gender that encounter these robots fall head-
over-heels. Apparently somehow that means they can take over the
earth. However, the robots fall in love with each other, kick the
aliens over a cliff and elope in their flying saucer. Pretty goofy
but an entertainingly novel storyline anyway.

3. The Murphy Anderson story, "Mutineers of Ganymede!", is more
typical of what I associate with Z-D, cheesy sci-fi. Earth
colonists land on Ganymede and discover mass quantities of gold,
diamonds and uranium. Some want to return to earth with their
newfound riches but the captain isn't interested. "Fools! We came
across millions of miles of space to find a home! We seek peace and
happiness...not corrupting riches!" The head mutineer pulls his
blaster on the captain, but the captain manages to turn it into a
fistfight with a quick move and is victorious. The "bad guys"
revolt again later and get control of the spaceship. They load it
with uranium. They say they're not really bad and anyone can come
with them back to earth. All the "good" colonists refuse. But
then, the Captain says, "I'll go with you. I know when I'm
licked." Such treachery! The "bad guys" welcome him with open arms
but of course it is a ruse. He gains control of the spaceship and
commands them to bring it back to Ganymede. Then they overhear a
radio signal from Earth announcing that an endless supply of uranium
has been found on the moon and it is now "as inexpensive as common
salt." (Guess they should have loaded up some of the gold and
diamonds.)
--this is the kind of lame sci-fi with cardboard characters and
unbelievable plot twists that I was talking about. I don't expect a
lot from these types of stories, but this seems really less than
average to me.

3. This is actually a horror story. A doctor comes to treat a very
sick boy worth a fortune. The boy's evil uncle kills the doctor in
a set-up car crash so the boy will die and the uncle will inherit.
But lo, the uncle gets to the hospital and the doctor is there
operating! The uncle says, "You can't be here! I killed you!" The
uncle goes to investigate the car, which blows up as he approaches--
killing him. The doctor mysteriously disappears and his body is
discovered in the car, miles from the hospital.
--this is a tried-and-true clunker plot. Probably 100 stories like
it in the precode and postcode 50s.

4. Another sci-fi "space opera" type story. May be Gil Kane art--
looks kind of like Kubert lite. A Han Solo type spaceship owner
agrees to follow a map in search of an asteroid of uranium for a
sister and brother. Evil claim-jumpers follow their progress. The
brother gets suspicious that the spaceship owner is a claim-jumper
and sabotages the steering mechanism of the lifeboat he is using to
explore the asteroids right after he locates the uranium asteroid.
However, the owner cleverly manages to get the ship to turn around
by standing on the bottom of it with his magnetic shoes. (???-don't
ask me, I have no idea how that would make a spaceship hurtling
through space suddenly make a hairpin turn).
The claim-jumpers have since attacked. The bad guys force the
brother and sister to sign over their claim, planning to leave them
to die on the asteroid. (So why did they need to sign over
their "claim" in the first place? They certainly hadn't filed
anything establishing their rights. Obviously I don't understand
the rules for staking a claim to a uranium asteroid.) The spaceship
owner returns just in time to save the day.
Somehow the claim-jumpers don't see him approaching in his out-of-
control spaceship, crash-landing I assume (or do the brakes still
work?), and entering the "glassite tent" they are in (which is made
of clear glass by the way). Once inside, though, one of the claim-
jumpers shoots at him. Either the brother or the sister bravely
pushes him aside (per the pictures it's the sister but per the word
balloons it's the brother). The bullet or whatever the gun shoots
blasts a hole in the glassite tent, letting all the oxygen escape.
Of course, only the captain has a spacesuit on. Luckily he has time
to get spacesuits to the brother and sister but sadly not to the
claim-jumpers as well.
--okay I try to do the whole "willing suspension of disbelief" thing
but really. There comes a point where it just doesn't work anymore.
